Special enrollment help · Illinois
Lost your health insurance? You may not have to wait.
Big life changes, like losing employer coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby, can open a special enrollment period outside open enrollment. A licensed local broker can help you figure out where you stand.
What is a special enrollment period?
Most people can only sign up for an individual or family health plan during open enrollment each fall. But certain life events, often called qualifying life events, can open a special enrollment period that lets you enroll or change plans at other times of the year.
Whether you qualify, and what you may need to show, depends on your situation. We'll walk through it with you. You may also qualify for financial help based on income; we'll check your options.
Life events that can open a special enrollment period
These are common examples, not a complete list, and each has its own rules.
Losing job-based coverage
You lost or left a job, your hours were cut, or your employer stopped offering a plan.
Aging off a parent's plan
Turning 26 usually means leaving a parent's plan, even if nothing else changed.
Moving
Moving to a new ZIP code or county can change which plans are available to you.
Getting married
A new spouse can mean new options for covering both of you.
Having or adopting a baby
Adding a child to your family is a common reason to enroll or change plans.
Other changes
Other situations can qualify too. Tell us what changed and we'll help you check.
Don't wait too long
A special enrollment period is generally 60 days from the life event. If you miss it, you may have to wait until the next open enrollment period.
If your coverage is ending soon, or ended recently, reach out now. Have the approximate date of the event handy. That date matters most.
