What is open enrollment?

Open enrollment is the once-a-year window when anyone can sign up for an individual or family health plan, or switch to a different one. You don't need a special reason.

Outside this window, you can usually only enroll or change plans after a qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby. If that's you, see our special enrollment page.

You may qualify for financial help based on income; we'll check your options.

Who should shop this year

Open enrollment is worth a look if any of these sound like you:

  • Self-employed people and small-business owners buying their own coverage
  • Gig workers, contractors, and anyone with income that changes month to month
  • Early retirees who are not yet eligible for Medicare
  • Anyone without health coverage through an employer
  • Anyone whose premium went up, or whose doctor left their plan’s network

How a licensed broker helps

We're a licensed independent insurance agency based in Cherry Valley. We help you compare the plans available in your ZIP code side by side: monthly premium, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, and whether your doctors and prescriptions are covered.

There's no extra cost to you for our help. We answer your questions in plain English, help you enroll, and you can call us when something comes up during the year.

What to have ready

Having these handy makes our call quick (about 15 minutes):

Open enrollment FAQ

When is open enrollment for 2027 health coverage in Illinois?

Open enrollment runs from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. If you enroll by Dec 15, 2026, coverage can start Jan 1, 2027. If you enroll after that but before open enrollment ends, coverage starts later.

What if I miss open enrollment?

Outside open enrollment, you generally need a qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby, to enroll. These events can open a special enrollment period, which is generally 60 days. Whether you qualify depends on your situation, and we can help you check.

Does it cost extra to use a broker?

No. There is no extra cost to you for our help. We walk you through your options, answer your questions, and help you enroll.

Can I get help paying for coverage?

You may qualify for financial help based on your household income. We will check your options when we talk.

I already have a plan. Do I need to do anything?

Plans, prices, and doctor networks can change from year to year, so open enrollment is a good time to review your plan, even if you liked it this year. We can help you compare it with what else is available where you live.

Can you help if I live outside the Rockford area?

Yes, as long as you live in Illinois. We are based in Cherry Valley and help with health coverage for Illinois residents only.

We are a licensed independent insurance agency, not the government or the Health Insurance Marketplace. Not all plans are available in all areas. Health insurance services are offered to Illinois residents only.
